We all love a big story–an epic journey, a life lesson, a huge transformation! But it’s often the simple everyday moments that hold just as much meaning and resonate the most with readers. During this class, we explore life’s smaller happenings through reading short slice-of-life mentor texts and responding to generative prompts. Join us as we unearth the funny, quirky, and just plain ordinary stories of our lives.

Do you have an idea for a picture book but are not sure where to begin? During this class, we explore the strength of your storyline by helping you sketch out your ideas. Using mentor texts, we introduce narrative techniques that are essential to picture books, such as characterization, plotting, pacing, and age-appropriate language. Each week, we customize the lesson based on your needs and interests. Immerse yourself in the world of children’s literature while developing and strengthening your own voice and style.

Do you have a solid draft of a picture book? During this class, we workshop drafts so you can get constructive feedback from your instructor and peers. We begin each week with a mini-lesson on craft and then devote the rest of the class to peer critiques, honing in on the essential elements of structure, language, and character arc. The goal is to create polished manuscripts that are submission ready for conferences and/or agents/editors.
