Royal Chaos at the Club: The True (and Hilarious) History Behind “CURTSEY”
A World Premiere with Local Roots
While the Woman’s Club of Red Bank is known for our community service and our beautiful historic clubhouse, we are about to be thrust into the spotlight in a whole new way. We are thrilled to share news of the world premiere of “CURTSEY – A Royal Comedy,” a fast-paced period farce written by David J. V. Meenan.
Why are we so buzzing about this? Because the play is set right here, in the spring of 1939, at an “impeccably proper—and wildly unprepared” version of the Woman’s Club of Red Bank!
When Royalty Met Red Bank
Inspired by the actual historical visit of the King and Queen of England to our small town, CURTSEY takes us behind the scenes of the social scramble that ensued. The story follows Bette English as she navigates a battlefield of starched linens, competitive curtsying, and a sisterhood of club members desperate to impress the Crown.
From razor-sharp gossip to physical comedy involving mangled accents and rattling teacups, the play skewers small-town politics and social climbing with vintage flair. While the Woman’s Club of Red Bank is not directly producing the play, we are honored that our clubhouse serves as the “play center” and inspiration for this riotous piece of theater.
Meet the Playwright: Join Us February 10th!
We have a very special treat for our members and friends. The man behind the “delightfully twisted mind” of the show, David J. V. Meenan, will be joining us at our upcoming Woman’s Club club member gathering on February 10th! This is a fantastic opportunity to meet the author, hear about the “unbelievable but true” stories that inspired the script, and get a behind-the-scenes look at how Red Bank’s history was turned into a stage comedy.
