As we prepare for the “Crowning Women Warriors” event hosted by the Woman’s Club of Red Bank this October, we are thrilled to introduce one of our distinguished panelists, Lisa Hou.

Dr. Lisa Hou, a pioneering physician and major general, has broken barriers in both the medical and military fields. Recognized as an honoree at the “Crowning Women Warriors” event, her story is one of dedication, leadership, and resilience. From serving as the first Asian American and female Adjutant General of New Jersey to providing critical care in Afghanistan, Dr. Hou’s journey inspires and empowers others to follow in her footsteps.

BIO

Major General Lisa J. Hou, D.O., is the Director, Office of the Joint Surgeon General, National Guard Bureau. 

As a part of the Special Staff to the Chief of the National Guard Bureau, Major General Hou oversees the development, coordination, communication and implementation of National Guard medical policies, procedures and operational responses in collaboration with state and federal interagency and international medical partners, as well as the development and coordination of guidance for medical operations conducted by National Guard CBRN Enterprise (CST, CERFP, and HRF) medical elements.

Prior to being selected as the Director as of July 2024, Major General Hou served as the Adjutant General of New Jersey since October 2020, commanding the more than 8,400 Soldiers and Airmen of the New Jersey National Guard and leading the execution of federal and state missions. She was also dual-hatted as the Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. In this role, she oversaw all state veterans’ programs, commissions, and facilities within the department.

Previously, she served as the Acting Deputy Commissioner of Veterans Affairs and was later appointed as the Deputy Adjutant General (DAG) for New Jersey. She also served as the first Joint Surgeon of the New Jersey National Guard, overseeing medical readiness, policies and joint medical training.

From 2013-2018, Dr. Hou served in the dual roles of commander of the New Jersey Medical Command and the State Surgeon. In those capacities, she was responsible for the medical and dental readiness of more than 6,000 Soldiers of the New Jersey Army National Guard.

In 2011, Dr. Hou served in Afghanistan as the Field Surgeon for Charlie Company, 700th Brigade Support Battalion, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. She was the sole medical provider with a team of combat medics on an Afghanistan National Army base and was responsible for providing routine and advanced emergency medical care in the combat theater for more than 600 coalition Soldiers, contractors, and foreign nationals.

In 2005, she served in Iraq as the senior field surgeon for Echo Company, 50th Main Support Battalion, 42nd Infantry Division, where she performed routine and advanced emergency medical care for coalition Soldiers and Iraqi civilians and maintained medical readiness for mass casualty trauma.

Dr. Hou joined the New Jersey National Guard in 1994 while a medical student at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, NJ. She received her doctoral degree in Osteopathic Medicine in 1996. 

She also earned a Master of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College in 2019 and a Master of Business Administration from Rutgers School of Business – Camden in 2022.
